ULTFARMS, a pioneering Horizon Europe Ocean Mission project, is gearing up to make waves at the Digital Ocean Forum. This prestigious event, co-organised with Mercator Ocean International and the Flanders Marine Institute, aims to collaborate with stakeholders in the co-design and co-creation of the European Digital Twin of the Ocean (EU DTO).
ULTFARMS is revolutionizing the future of Low-Trophic Aquaculture (LTA) systems. The project, led by Deltares, an independent institute for water and subsurface research based in the Netherlands, is designed to optimize LTA production in challenging offshore conditions and low-salinity environments. By integrating innovative engineering, technical, ecological, and biological processes, ULTFARMS aims to establish a profitable, sustainable, and ecological production chain for low-trophic level species, including seaweed and molluscs, within offshore wind farms in the North Sea and Baltic Sea.
As a 42-month project that started on January 1st, 2023, and concludes on June 30th, 2026, ULTFARMS brings together a consortium of 25 members from 9 different countries. This diverse group includes stakeholders from across the value chains of offshore wind farms and low-trophic aquaculture.
At the Digital Ocean Forum, ULTFARMS will seize the opportunity to showcase its groundbreaking ocean multi-use approach.
During the event, ULTFARMS will participate in the EU DTO’s public session, presenting the project’s vision and contributing to the ongoing progress of this vital initiative. Additionally, the technical workshop held on June 14 will gather input from esteemed experts representing approximately 50 invited research projects. Their valuable insights will help shape the development of the EU DTO and explore methods for potential contributions.
The Digital Ocean Forum serves as an essential platform for ULTFARMS to engage in forward-looking discussions. The project aims to actively participate in discussions on how the EU DTO can best serve Ocean communities and actors, its evolution, and its impact on policy and decision-making processes.
ULTFARMS is excited to be part of this collaborative event, which brings together experts, stakeholders, policymakers, and interested citizens dedicated to shaping a robust EU DTO. Stay tuned for updates on ULTFARMS’ contributions to the Digital Ocean Forum and its commitment to driving innovation for a sustainable and thriving Ocean.
