Exploring Ocean Multi-Use Aquaculture: ULTFARMS’ Recent Presentation at the University of New England

In January 2025, Eva Strothotte from Forschungs- und Entwicklungszentrum Fachhochschule Kiel GmbH represented ULTFARMS at an exciting exchange event between Europe and the United States, hosted by the University of New England in Biddeford, ME. The event focused on the evolving field of multi-use aquaculture and how Europe is leading the charge in this area.

The presentation covered several key aspects of the multi-use aquaculture landscape, including:

  • Legal Status and Government Goals: Eva discussed the current regulatory framework and how European governments are shaping policies to support sustainable aquaculture practices.
  • Technical Feasibility: The feasibility of implementing multi-use systems was explored, highlighting the benefits and challenges of integrating aquaculture with other marine activities.
  • Aquaculture Species in Europe and the USA: A comparative look at the species of aquaculture in both regions provided valuable insights into the diverse opportunities and challenges faced by these industries.

Europe is leading the way in multi-use aquaculture, with ULTFARMS‘ pilot projects offering valuable insights. The United States is making great strides in this field, and there is an exciting opportunity for both regions to learn from each other as they continue to develop and implement similar strategies.

This exchange of ideas between Europe and the US is a step forward in advancing sustainable aquaculture practices globally, fostering collaboration, and driving innovation.

We look forward to seeing how these discussions evolve and contribute to a more sustainable and efficient aquaculture industry worldwide.

Stay tuned for more updates on ULTFARMS’ ongoing initiatives in multi-use aquaculture!
