Stakeholder Meeting in Kolding: Advancing Ocean Multi-Use and Sustainable Innovation

On November 20-21, Kolding hosted a two-day stakeholder meeting that brought together leading voices in ocean multi-use innovation.

The event centered on the EU lighthouse projects ULTFARMS, WIN@sea, and OLAMUR, which explore the integration of low-trophic aquaculture with fossil-free energy systems.

Can we sustainably grow seaweed and mussels within offshore wind farms? These projects aim to answer that critical question.

The meeting provided an invaluable platform for discussing progress, sharing insights, and highlighting milestones for these initiatives. Stakeholders and experts from organizations such as Energistyrelsen, Kystdirektoratet, Eva Strothotte, Fiskeristyrelsen, Green Power Denmark, DN, DFPO, Food and Bio Cluster, Blå Biomasse, Ørsted, Havhøst, SINTEF Ocean, Vordingborg Kommune, and Ocean Rainforest brought diverse perspectives to the discussions.

A key highlight of the event was the panel discussion on Day 2, titled “Opportunities & Challenges in Upscaling Multi-Use in Denmark.” The panel addressed pressing questions, including:

  • What are the barriers to ocean multi-use in Denmark?
  • What is the market potential for seaweed and mussel products?
  • How can local stakeholders and communities be engaged in scaling up these initiatives?

Discussions delved into site selection, permitting challenges, and consumer acceptance of seaweed and mussels cultivated at pilot sites.

A heartfelt thank you to all participants for making this meeting an inspiring and productive step forward.

Your insights pave the way for innovative and sustainable ocean solutions!

Special recognition goes to Annette Bruhn, project leader for WIN@sea, and Tim Wilms from Vattenfall, who oversees the offshore wind farm at the Kriegers Flak pilot site, for their outstanding organization of this impactful event.
