Samsø Pilot – Update June 2025

Excitement is mounting at the Ultfarms Samsø pilot site with the upcoming deployment of our innovative net + tube mussel system. Here’s what to expect:

  • Why a Net + Tube Design?
Net+tube systems require less maintenance and can hold larger biomass pr unit that traditional long-line systems making them potentially attractive to offshore conditions. Experience from the first deployment revealed that the systems needs to be reinforced to withstand the combination of heavy spatfall and strong physical forcing.

  • Deployment Timeline
Crews have completed fabrication of the net + tube units and pre-staged them in a nearby harbour. Weather permitting, we’ll deploy the modules early next week.
After deployment, monitoring of mussel recruitment and growth will be carried out after the summer.spat survival, shell growth, and fouling intensity. Concurrent sensors will log temperature and chlorophyll levels, linking environmental conditions to system performance.

  • Scalability & Next Steps
If the net + tube approach outperforms standard collectors, it could become a turnkey solution for small-scale growers in exposed Baltic sites. We’ll publish our findings—spat retention rates, yield comparisons, and maintenance logs—to inform wider adoption.
