Danish Anholt Pilot update – Dec 2024

Progress in Mussel and Seaweed Cultivation

The Anholt pilot is advancing sustainable aquaculture with significant developments in both mussel and seaweed cultivation.

As of September 17, mussel recruitment on commercial spat collectors deployed in June has shown promising results, with fresh weight yields reaching up to 2.7 kg per meter and an average length of 1.5 cm. The longline system remains robust, although additional buoyancy may be required as growth progresses.

In seaweed cultivation, 2024 marks the continuation of 2-year production lines and the deployment of new vertical lines at varying depths. Sugar kelp has shown remarkable growth, doubling its frond length to 34 cm at a depth of 10-15 meters. However, challenges remain, with some seaweeds at shallower depths experiencing suffocation, emphasizing the need for further optimization of submersion strategies.

These updates highlight the Anholt pilot’s contributions to refining sustainable practices in aquaculture, with continued progress anticipated in the coming months.
