Anholt Pilot – Update June 25

Early June Mussel & Seaweed Review

This past week, the Ultfarms Anholt pilot site sprang to life again as our team conducted thesecond major inspection of the season. Here’s what unfolded on-site:

  • Primo June Inspection
At the start of June, our technicians boarded the support vessel under clear skies and calm seas to assess both mussel and seaweed installations. Visual checks confirmed that all longlines and moorings remained secure after winter storms.
  • Sampling Last Year’s Mussel Settlement
We retrieved mussels that settled on our collectors during last season. Samples are currently being processed early indicators point toward healthy growth rates, high meat content and good survival over winter. These results will feed into our modelling of biomass yield and filtration capacity.

  • Deployment of Fresh Spat Collectors
To capture this season’s recruitment pulse, brand-new spat collectors were lowered using different spat collector types  along the longline. The deployed spat collectors have been optimised compared to last years deployment to improve comparisons between collector types.
  • Seaweed Line Inspection & Testing Completion
Our Laminaria and Ulva grow-out lines—deployed last autumn—were carefully inspected for blade integrity and fouling organisms. With seaweed testing now concluded, blades have been harvested and are heading to the lab for nutrient and growth-efficiency analyses.

The Anholt pilot continues to validate the opportunities s of integrated multi-trophic aquaculture in offshore conditions but also of the challenges. Stay tuned for detailed growth curves and water-quality data as we refine our protocols for Year 2!
