Launch of the Semi-submersible Mussel Farm by OOS: A New Era in Offshore Aquaculture

Recently, a significant milestone in offshore aquaculture was achieved with the launch of the test Semi-submersible Mussel Farm by OOS.

Launch and Transfer to Borssele Windfarm

The test mussel farm, designed to withstand the challenging conditions of offshore environments, was successfully launched on April 10th. Following rigorous checks and preparations, the farm was transferred to its operational site at the Borssele windfarm on May 8th. Anchoring the farm at this location is a strategic move, leveraging the existing infrastructure of the windfarm and creating a symbiotic relationship between renewable energy production and sustainable aquaculture.

Installation of Longlines

The next phase of the project involves the installation of five longlines, each extending 200 meters. These longlines will serve as the primary structure for mussel cultivation, providing ample space and optimal conditions for mussel growth. The installation process is set to commence as soon as possible, ensuring the farm is fully operational and ready for the upcoming growth cycles.

T0 Survey: Mapping the Seafloor

A crucial component of the project’s initial phase is the T0 survey of the seafloor, scheduled for July. Utilizing an Automated Underwater Vessel (AUV), this survey will provide detailed mapping and analysis of the seabed conditions. The data collected will inform the placement and management of the mussel lines, ensuring they are situated in areas with suitable substrate and environmental conditions for mussel farming.

Future Prospects

The successful deployment of the Semi-submersible Mussel Farm at Borssele windfarm marks an exciting development in the field of offshore aquaculture. By integrating aquaculture with renewable energy infrastructure, OOS is pioneering a sustainable approach that maximizes the use of marine space while contributing to food security and environmental health.

As we move forward, the insights gained from this test farm will be invaluable in refining and scaling up the technology. The collaboration between aquaculture and renewable energy sectors holds great promise for the future, offering a blueprint for sustainable marine resource management and a great proof of the efficiency of the Ocean Multi Use approach.

Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to monitor and report on the progress of the Semi-submersible Mussel Farm.
